40-Year-Old Man Has Mental Problems, Allegedly Forgets To Turn Off Cigarettes In Mattress, One House Burns

JAKARTA - A house in Jalan Pinang, Cilandak, South Jakarta has been burned down. According to the firefighters, the cause of the fire was caused by a lit cigarette butt hitting the mattress.

South Jakarta Gulkarmat Sub-dept. officer, Usman, confirmed the incident. The incident occurred on Monday, May 23, at 01.06 WIB.

Usman said the fire incident started when a man known to have a mental disorder or an Insider with Mental Disorders (ODGJ), named Wisnu (40) was smoking a cigarette in one of the rooms of the house. Unknowingly the fire grabbed as a mattress.

"Smoked a cigarette on the mattress, grabbed some of the mattress. (Then) at 01.00 the fire was seen on the 2nd floor of the house, which had grown bigger," said Usman when confirmed, Monday, May 23.

The family and residents tried to extinguish the fire and some immediately reported the incident to the South Jakarta fire department.

Until finally, as many as 11 units and dozens of personnel were deployed by the South Jakarta damkar. As a result, the fire was extinguished at 02.00 WIB.

"Starting the blackout at 01.16, then at 01.40 the cooling started and was declared finished at 02.00," he explained.

Usman explained that there were no casualties in the incident. However, the loss is estimated at hundreds of millions of rupiah.

"The loss is estimated at up to Rp. 200 million," he concluded.
