YOGYAKARTA - The Yogyakarta City Environment Agency takes about a week to normalize all depots and temporary waste disposal sites from overflowing garbage after the Piyungan Final Disposal Site is reopened.
“Today we started to clean up the garbage in the depot and temporary garbage dump. It will take a week for normalization," said Head of the Waste Management Division of the Yogyakarta City Environmental Service (DLH), Ahmad Haryoko, quoted by Antara, Thursday, May 12.
According to him, all garbage disposal sites (TPS) and waste depots in Yogyakarta City will only return to normal conditions on Wednesday (18/5).
"We have also asked the DIY Waste Processing Center not to take a day off on Sunday (15/5) so that the normalization process can be completed quickly," he said.
The total pile of garbage in all TPS and waste depots in the city of Yogyakarta due to the closure of the Piyungan TPA for almost a week is estimated at around 2,000 tons or around 350 tons per day.
The process of transporting waste to the Piyungan TPA is prioritized for several areas first, such as on Jalan Hayam Wuruk or Lempuyangan, Jalan KS Tubun, and Taman Sari because piles of garbage have spilled onto the road.
The transportation of waste from Yogyakarta City to Piyungan TPA is supported by 32 fleets belonging to the DLH and an additional 12 privately managed fleets for the Keraton and Malioboro areas as well as six fleets from the Trade Office to transport waste from the market as well as about five privately managed colts.
Haryoko also ensured that the entire fleet carrying garbage was in good condition. "If there is damage, such as a perforated tub, it will be repaired immediately so that the garbage does not spill on the road," he said.
Meanwhile, Yogyakarta Deputy Mayor Heroe Poerwadi said he would build a waste processing site located outside the city, namely in Bantul Regency, with an area of about two hectares and could be expanded if needed.
"There has been communication with local residents. Now in the procurement process and payments will be made in 2023 as well as for its implementation," he said.
He ensured that the location will be used for waste processing and not a landfill so that there will be no accumulation of garbage like in the Piyungan TPA.
“We are still studying the waste processing method that will be used. For example, using an incinerator to process inorganic waste into bricks. Organic waste will be processed into compost," he said.
Heroe said that the funds allocated to realize the waste processing site were not small. "For example, the procurement of an incinerator machine is quite expensive, around Rp. 15 billion with a capacity of 40-50 tons of waste," he said.
