JAKARTA – A mother and her child became victims of robbery while riding a motorcycle on Jalan I Gusti Ngurah Rai, towards Pondok Kopi, Duren Sawit District, East Jakarta, Monday, May 9, at around 20.00 WIB. The perpetrator with the initials RY (35) was successfully arrested by residents after the motorbike he stole was damaged, the front tire came off.

The victim, named Sunarti, told reporters at the scene of the incident that had just happened. The robbery by RY occurred when it was raining in Jakarta, and the traffic on Jalan I Gusti Ngurah Rai was still full of motorized vehicles.

Sunarti said that at that time she and her daughter, Ayu, were fixing the front tire of a Honda Beat motorcycle that often came off.

"I'm repairing the motorbike with my son. My motorbike has a loose front wheel bolt so the tire keeps coming off. Fix the motorbike on the side of the road, the intention is to find a repair shop to service it all," explained Sunarti to VOI at the scene, Monday, May 9, evening .

When the victim was repairing the motorbike, suddenly the perpetrator came alone. Sunarti said that the perpetrator came on foot and then approached her.

The perpetrator, who was known to be a resident of Bridge Village, Buaran, pretended to want to help the victim. Then when he saw an opportunity, the perpetrator immediately grabbed the motorbike key that was held by Ayu (the victim) until a tug of war occurred.

"The perpetrator took the keys to the motorbike that was held by my son. Had a tug. Then the motorbike was taken away by the perpetrators," said the woman, a resident of Pisangan Baru, Matraman District, East Jakarta.

Sunarti explained, the perpetrator first started the victim's motorbike after he managed to snatch the motorbike key from his son. Then the suspect took his motorbike away.

"The perpetrator was chased by my son while shouting at the thief by showing his hand at the perpetrator. Many local residents across the street saw when my son screamed," he said.

Unfortunately, while escaping, the front tire of the victim's motorbike fell off, causing the perpetrator to fall onto the asphalt. The distance between the victim and the perpetrator who fell, about 50 meters.

Residents around and passing motorists were furious when they heard the victim's screams. The suspect fled, leaving behind the stolen motorbike.

However, residents who knew about the perpetrator's crime followed him. The perpetrators of RY were also arrested by a number of residents in front of a mini market, Jalan I Gusti Ngurah Rai, towards Jatinegara, Duren Sawit District.

According to Ali, an eyewitness to the incident, when the perpetrator tried to run away from the victim's motorbike, residents rushed after him from behind. The perpetrator fled to the front of the mini market. "Someone shouted a motorbike thief, the victims were women. The same residents were chased and arrested in front of Indomaret," said Ali.

Dozens of residents who were annoyed by the perpetrator's actions, finally judged the perpetrator to a pulp. Fortunately, the vigilante action was successfully broken up by members of the Criminal Investigation Unit (Reskrim) of the Duren Sawit Police who arrived at the scene. The suspect, who was naked, was arrested by the police.

In order to disperse the crowd, a member of the Criminal Investigation Unit was forced to fire warning shots into the air while dragging the robbers into a police car. The perpetrators were also taken to the Duren Sawit Police Headquarters for further legal proceedings.
