JAKARTA - Hundreds of houses located on the banks of the Ciliwung River, Kebon Pala area, RT 006/05, Kampung Melayu Village, Jatinegara District, East Jakarta were again flooded, Thursday, May 5.

The overflowing water sent from Bogor, West Java, which passed through the area, overflowed from the Ciliwung River and submerged a number of residents' houses on the third day of the Eid holiday.

"The water started to rise in front of the house at around 04.00 WIB. The water level was more than 1 meter," said Ponidi, one of the residents whose house was flooded, Thursday, May 5, morning.

Although the inundation of water makes it difficult for residents to carry out activities, residents claim that they are used to the phenomenon of flooding that occurs regularly.

"Many residents now have high-rise houses, meaning that they rarely evacuate. Stay above, at the attic," he said.

Until now, almost all residents prefer to stay on the second floor of their house. Residents only move their motorized vehicles to higher ground so they are not submerged in water.

Ponidi explained that his area has often been hit by floods even though it has not rained in Jakarta.

"If there is a flood, it depends on shipments from Depok, Bogor. Even though it is bright here, if there is a shipment, it will flood," he complained.

In fact, Ponidi admitted that it had rained in the East Jakarta area for two consecutive days but his house was not flooded.

"It has rained here for two days but there is no water delivery (from Bogor), so it's not flooded," he said.

Even though the atmosphere is still Eid holiday, Ponidi said, the flood did not disturb the activities of residents who are still in touch with their relatives.

"Yeah, just like this, Eid was yesterday. Don't be too disturbed," he said.
