JAKARTA - A kangaroo attacked and seriously injured and scratched a 69-year-old woman on a golf course on Australia's Gold Coast, authorities said Friday, April 29.

The kangaroo suddenly pounced on the woman while she was playing golf, knocking her down and being kicked and stepped on multiple times, Queensland State Ambulance Operations Supervisor Joel McEwan told reporters.

"He was walking on the golf course and the kangaroo appeared from the side and just attacked," McEwan said.

The victim was taken to the hospital and his condition is now stable.

"The jaw injuries seemed to be the most significant ... but he had lacerations to his face, jaw, arms and legs," he said.

Australia has about 50 million kangaroos, according to experts, and they are known to make frequent appearances on golf courses.

It is not uncommon for these marsupials to attack humans as housing developments have extended to their habitat.
