BANJARMASIN - The death toll due to the collapse of the Alfamart minimarket building on Jalan Ahmad Yani, Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan (Kalsel) has increased to five people.

"The victim, on behalf of Hanafi (22) an Alfamart employee, died at the Sultan Agung Hospital on Tuesday afternoon," said Banjar Police Chief AKBP Doni Hadi Santoso, quoted by Antara, Tuesday, April 19.

Hanafi was previously found alive when he was evacuated from the rubble of the building on Tuesday morning at around 07.00 WITA and immediately received intensive care at the hospital.

Meanwhile, two other victims who were also found at almost the same time died on the spot.

However, because Hanafi's injuries were quite severe and he was trapped under the concrete for approximately 14 hours since the incident occurred at around 17.00 WITA on Monday afternoon, the victim finally could not survive.

Doni also conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims, including the four other victims who died. As for the eight survivors, he hopes to recover as soon as possible.

Regarding the continuation of evacuation efforts, if there are still trapped victims, Doni admitted that he will continue to coordinate with the joint SAR team commanded by Basarnas.

"We are still waiting if there are reports from the public regarding the loss of family members by opening a command post near the location," explained the Police Chief.
