JAKARTA - Pertamina is reportedly interested in developing the electric vehicle battery business. President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero) Nicke Widyawati said Pertamina will develop electric vehicle batteries from upstream to downstream, namely processing, distribution, to recycling.

"We plan to enter into the EV (electric vehicle) battery ecosystem," Nicke said in a webinar, Tuesday, October 6.

Nicke explained that in this development, his party cooperates with PT PLN (Persero), PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminum (Inalum), and PT Nasional Hijau Lestari which is engaged in the waste processing business.

In the electric vehicle battery business, the investment spent is with a direct investment scheme to provide flexibility for each BUMN to focus its investment according to the value relevant to its core business.

"With this, when there is shifting from fossil fuel to electric vehicle, Pertamina has established a business transformation in accordance with future energy demand," he said.

In the national energy general plan (RUEN), by 2025 the government targets 2,200 electric cars and 2.13 million electric motorbikes to be produced.

That number will increase to 4.2 million units of electric cars and 13.3 million units of electric motors in 2050. In the RUEN, electric motor vehicle charging stations are also targeted to reach 1,000 units in 2025 and 10,000 units in 2050.
