JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) noted that there are at least two main problems in the development of the people's salt industry, namely the low production and quality of the salt produced.

"From the report I received, there are two main problems we face in the absorption of people's salt, the first is the low quality of the people's salt so that it does not meet industry standards," said President Jokowi in a limited meeting via video conference on the topic of accelerating the absorption of people's salt from the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. , quoted from Antara, Monday, October 5.

According to him, a solution must be found immediately, especially when everyone knows the point of the problem, but a solution has never been found. The Head of State said that based on data until September 22, 2020, there were still 738 thousand tons of people's salt that was not absorbed by the national industry.

"This is to think about a solution, so that the people can buy salt," he said.

The second problem in the salt industry, said the President, is related to the low national salt production. This is what makes Indonesia still a salt importing country even though it has a long coastline.

"So the easiest way is to import salt. It has always been there and there has never been a solution," said President Jokowi.

The President said that out of the national salt requirement of four million tons per year, the national salt production is only two million tons. As a result, it is still imported to meet industrial needs.

"I think we have to do improvement steps, starting from a large scale reform of the supply chain from upstream to downstream," he said.
