East Java Water And Air Police Thwarted Trade Of Protected Birds

SURABAYA - The Directorate of Water and Air Police (Ditpolairud) of the East Java Regional Police thwarted the trade in protected birds smuggled from Banjarmasin City to Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya.

"From this disclosure, we have arrested two suspects, namely AFM, a 24-year-old from Tambak Mayor, Surabaya, and 33-year-old J from Banjar, South Kalimantan," said the Director of East Java Water And Air Police, Grand Commissioner Pol Puji Hendro Wibowo in Surabaya, reported by Antara, Tuesday, 12 April.

Meanwhile, two people with the initials B, a resident of Surabaya, and R, a resident of Banjarmasin, fled and are currently on the wanted list (DPO).

The protected birds are not equipped with legal documents.

Following up on this information, officers inspected the truck's cargo and monitored suspicious passengers, and then the officers arrested two suspects in Surabaya.

"This suspect was arrested when he was about to carry out a sale and purchase transaction of smuggled birds that were protected at the Surabaya bird market," said the middle officer of the National Police.

From the suspect's hands, the police seized a Cililin or Tangkar Ongklet bird, five Green Cucak Birds, two Small Leaf Cucak Birds, two Gadung Cucak Birds and a Blue Winged Cucak Bird.

Then four Anis Kembang birds, three of them alive and one dead. Then, 90 birds of the Teledean species or worm brushes were also secured, of which 78 were alive and 12 had died.

Furthermore, 19 Ninja Hummingbirds were alive and dead, 20 Yellow Hummingbirds were alive and dead, and 23 cotton shoots.

"This animal was immediately handed over to the Natural Resources Conservation Center for quarantine," he said.

For his actions, the perpetrators were charged with Article 40 paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 21 paragraph (2) letters a and c of the Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and Their Ecosystems.

In addition, Article 88 letter a Jo Article 35 paragraph (1) letter a of the Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 21 of 2019 concerning Animal, Fish and Plant Quarantine.
