JAKARTA - The world's first nasal spray coronavirus vaccine has been registered in Russia, the Ministry of Health said in a statement on Friday.

"The Russian Ministry of Health has registered a nasal spray form of the coronavirus vaccine Gam-COVID-Vac (Sputnik V), developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Ministry of Health," the statement said, citing TASS April 2.

According to the ministry, the vaccine consists of two components based on the type 16 and type 5 adenovirus vectors. Two doses will be administered at an interval of three weeks.

The ministry added that this type of vaccination creates mucosal immunity against the corona virus in the respiratory tract.

"Use of the nasal spray induces a humoral immune response (increased IgA antibody titers in the blood, as well as nasal secretions and viral neutralizing IgG antibody titers in the blood), and a cellular immune response to infection caused by SARS-CoV-2," the statement added.

At this point, the vaccine is intended for immunization of individuals over the age of 18.

Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko earlier said that the use of a nasal spray coronavirus vaccine would be included in the recommendations for booster injections.

"We are waiting for instructions, later when the experts make a report, then we will make a decision," said Murashko.

For information, in October 2021, the Russian Ministry of Health issued a permit to the Gamaleya Center to conduct Phase Two clinical trials of a vaccine against the coronavirus in the form of a nasal spray. This March, the center submitted its vaccine registration.
