Vice President Doesn't Care About Postponing Election: We Are Focused On Our Tasks Only Thinking Until 2024

JAKARTA - Vice President (Wapres) Ma'ruf Amin emphasized that he and President Joko Widodo will focus on carrying out their duties until 2024 according to the mandate given by the people, and not dealing with the growing discourse regarding the postponement of the 2024 election.

"We are focused on carrying out our duties, accelerating recovery efforts until 2024," said the Vice President, on the sidelines of his working visit in Bandung, as reported by Antara, Wednesday, March 23.

The vice president emphasized that the mandate given to the President and himself was only until 2024.

According to him, the discourse on postponing the election that is developing is not the business of him and President Jokowi.

"So we only think until 2024, there are no other thoughts. So other matters are not our territory. That is a developing discourse," continued Ma'ruf Amin.

The discourse of postponing the election has recently emerged in the public sphere. This discourse reaps the pros and cons among the public, observers and politicians.

Previously, the Chairperson of the DPR, Puan Maharani, emphasized that the schedule for the 2024 General Election had been mutually agreed upon by the Government, the DPR and the KPU, which would be held on February 14, 2024.

Puan did not explain clearly about the discourse on postponing the 2024 General Election. However, the schedule has been determined by the relevant institutions, so it will be carried out according to a predetermined date.

"Regarding the 2024 election, I said that the DPR's position is in accordance with the mechanism that has been carried out," said Puan.

The proposal to postpone the 2024 General Election came from the General Chair of the PKB, Muhaimin Iskandar. He argued that the public did not want the post-pandemic economic recovery to be disrupted if the vote was held in February 2024.

After Cak Imin, PAN chairman Zulkifli Hasan and Golkar chairman Airlangga Hartarto also supported the postponement of the 2024 General Election.
