Money Damaged Due To Floods Can Be Changed

JAKARTA - Bank Indonesia has stated that the public can exchange rupiah currency damaged by floods in the Jabodetabek area, with money on proper condition at the Central Bank counter.

Executive Director of the BI Communication Department Onny Widjanarko said that people who wish to exchange rupiah damaged due to floods can take the money to counters at Bank Indonesia offices. However, there are several criteria for redeemable money.

At the BI counter, officers will check the appropriateness of the rupiah currency. Several criteria for damaged rupiah currency that can be exchanged are that the money is original money. Then the physical paper is still intact at least 2/3 of the total physical money.

"Apart from these conditions, just take it to the BI counter. Later, the officers will be assisted," said Onny in Jakarta, Friday, January 3.

However, BI only served the exchange for rupiah-denominated money that was damaged by the flood. The Central Bank will not serve foreign currency exchange.

"Rupiah currency can be met with several criteria. Foreign currency cannot," said Onny.

In addition, BI also ensures that payment system operations and monetary operations continue to run normally in the midst of the Jabodetabek flood disaster.

The authorities will also keep money market conditions running smoothly and normally in order to maintain liquidity and economic stability.

"BI will always coordinate with banks and other relevant institutions / authorities to ensure the continuity of cash and non-cash payment system services in a safe and smooth manner for the public," he said.

Floods in Jabodetabek occurred since Wednesday 1 January in the early hours of the morning. Floods are caused by heavy rainfall and water delivery from the Katulampa Dam in Bogor, West Java.
