Attending HPN Commemoration, Jokowi Gives Three Options Forms Of Publisher Right Regulations To Be Ratified

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo has pushed for the drafting of regulations for publisher rights or journalistic copyrights to be ratified immediately. This is an effort to organize the press industry ecosystem.

He said this while attending the commemoration of the National Press Day held by the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI).

Jokowi gave three options regarding the form of publisher rights regulation, including forming a new law, revising the existing law related to the media industry, or issuing a government regulation (PP).

"There are several options that we may be able to decide soon. Either push for a new law immediately, or the second one revise the old law, or the fastest is a government regulation or PP," said Jokowi while attending the peak of the online HPN commemoration, Wednesday, February 9. .

The former governor of DKI Jakarta handed over the election to the form of regulation to PWI and the Press Council, before being executed by the government.

"We leave it to PWI and the Press Council so that we can finalize the regulation. I will continue to push it after the choice has been determined. Is it a new law, revision of the old law, or using PP," said Jokowi.

Then, Jokowi wants a balanced press industry competition climate to continue to be created. Foreign platform companies must be regulated for better governance. Thus, this can make the press industry healthier and stronger.

Furthermore, Jokowi emphasized that information sovereignty must be realized together. This is done by strengthening a healthy national press industry ecosystem, building and strengthening a national advertising platform, and creating a national video platform so that it is not completely dependent on foreign video platforms.

"We must not only be a global technology product market and we must immediately build an innovative technology platform that helps and motivates the public to obtain accurate and accountable quality information," he explained.

Previously, Head of PWI Pusat Atal S. Depari revealed that his party had submitted a draft regulation on publisher rights to the government since October 2021.

Atal also asked Jokowi to encourage the continued process of drafting the publisher rights regulation until it was immediately ratified.

"We have submitted and compiled the publisher rights and we submitted them in October last year. Indeed, the draft is not yet perfect, but now the ball is in the hands of the government. I beg the President to please instruct the relevant ministries to process it," said Atal.
