JAKARTA - The Mayor of Surabaya, Eri Cahyadi, admitted that he was disappointed with the case of a teacher beating one of his students at the 49th State Junior High School (SMPN) in Surabaya.

"I don't want this incident to happen again in Surabaya, because this teacher is a parent, then automatically speaking (guiding him) must be with love," said Eri, Saturday, January 2.

Previously, a three-second video circulated via WhatsApp, a teacher at SMPN 49 Surabaya City hitting a student in front of the class during 100 percent face-to-face learning (PTM).

Seeing this, Mayor Eri immediately visited SMP Negeri 49 to provide guidance to all teachers and teaching staff. He admitted that he was shocked and disappointed by the violence in the video and did not want it to happen again.

The Mayor of Surabaya then ensured that this would not happen again in the city of Surabaya. Because, if this happens again, then he will face the teacher directly.

"God willing, there is no intention of this teacher to be excessive, sometimes there is fatigue. So, I ask for help and I entrust to look after our students at school, because they are future leaders of the Nation," he said.

Furthermore, related to the sanctions that will be given to the teacher, Eri admitted that he would wait for the results of the examination from the Surabaya Inspectorate. He was also grateful that the teacher who had committed the violence immediately apologized to his students, before the video was widely circulated.

"How will we pass it together, so I ask for help and I entrust it to the principal and the teachers to look after our students," he said.

So that this incident does not happen again, he asked the Surabaya City Education Office (Dispendik) to invite all teachers in the City of Heroes to be given reinforcement. In fact, to ensure the teachers have integrity in teaching, Eri asked to conduct an integrity test for the teachers.

"We will start on Monday, we will apply it to teachers in Surabaya," he said.

The former Head of the Surabaya City Development Planning Agency (Bappeko) did not deny that this incident was one of the impacts of online learning that had been carried out for almost two years. As a result, the enthusiasm of the students and teachers was reduced.

"If you are online for too long, this is the impact. So, if PTM like this you must be disciplined to improve the morals of each child," he said.

Eri understands that every teacher must also be able to improve the morals of each of their students and must be able to prevent their students from bad things, such as drugs and promiscuity.

"This cannot be taught in subjects, but must take a heart-to-heart approach in order to create akhlaqul karimah in children. So in the last 30 minutes after class, there will be additional non-formal lessons about this," he said.
