Those Who Could Be Threats In Papua

JAKARTA - Papua became a concern during the DPR Commission I working meeting with Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto. Members of Commission I of the DPR asked Prabowo to be aware of the various threats that come to the land of paradise.

Threats take many forms. Starting from the presence of missionaries, social workers, researchers, tourists, journalists, to businesses. They blend in there easily. This is why Papua is prone to being infiltrated.

Intelligence and terrorist observer, Haris Abu Ulya, said Papua was a global target because it had strategic value in many aspects. Regarding its natural wealth, it is also about its strategic area which is the target of intelligence operations. This threat must be anticipated by the government.

"Of course everything must be closely monitored. This must be reduced or anticipated. Papua should be a top priority, it cannot be separated from Indonesia," said Ulya, when contacted by VOI, in Jakarta, Tuesday, November 12, 2019.

He is afraid that the region will be separated from the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia because of the various threats. Moreover, the issue of an independent Papua has been echoed in the international realm, through Benny Wenda. This issue was also taken seriously by the leadership of the Labor Party in Britain, Jeremy Corbyn, who had the opportunity to become prime minister there.

The steps suggested by Ulya to anticipate this threat are the implementation of territorial, intelligence and combat operations from all Matra. The goal is one, to maintain the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia and ensure that Papua becomes an integral part of the Republic of Indonesia.

"Strengthening the combat capability of the TNI in anticipation of all possibilities to maintain the integrity of the Papua region."

During the DPR Commission I working meeting with Prabowo, Monday, November 11, the threat to Papua was expressed by a member of Commission I DPR from the PKS faction Jazuli Juwaini. He is worried about the presence of missionaries in Papua. He said that these missionaries were not just spreading religion, but were threatening geopolitics and were feared that they could cause riots in Papua.

"Sorry, Mr. Minister of Defense, we want to mention something sensitive in Papua, there are also many planes that carry missionaries, the Papuan (security) party is having trouble checking this," he said.

"What we are worried about (is not) about people spreading religion. But what we are worried about is that there are people on behalf of missionaries but keep other agendas in Papua. That is the culprit, we may not make accusations, but must be examined," said Jazuli who also suggested Prabowo to add personnel for security in Papua, which has a large area.

After the meeting, Prabowo said that he would consider the recommendations of all the results of the meeting with Commission I of the DPR. He will also strategize while formulating a threat-based defense posture there.

"They (Commission I) have just returned from Papua to see the condition of the soldiers' welfare there. Broadly speaking, there is a sufficiently in-depth discussion of the defense posture regarding threats that we will formulate together with other government institutions," Prabowo said after the meeting.
