Indonesian Student In Canada Found Dead, Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Ensures Not Victims Of Crime

JAKARTA - The student from Indonesia in Toronto, Canada, who was found dead on January 7, was not a victim of a crime.

This was conveyed by the Director of the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha. An autopsy has been carried out on the body of the student named Grace Karundeng.

"We are still waiting for the results at this time, in accordance with the privacy law in Canada, the results of the autopsy will be immediately given to the family. So, we respect the privacy of the family in this regard," he explained in Jakarta, Antara, Thursday, January 13.

However, Judha said, his party had received information from the coroner informally, that the cause of death of the deceased was not caused by a crime.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian representative in Toronto has been in contact with the family and established communication regarding the request to repatriate the body.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indonesian Consulate General in Toronto, and the Indonesian Embassy in Ottawa have communicated (via) a direct zoom meeting with the family to submit a follow-up to the family's request to facilitate the repatriation of the body to Indonesia," he explained.

Judha said that the process of repatriating the bodies faced a number of challenges, especially due to restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the Indonesian Consulate General in Toronto will still prepare various documents, in collaboration with local authorities, to issue death certificates and carry out the burial process according to applicable health protocols.

Previously, it was reported that an Indonesian student was found dead in her apartment in Toronto, Canada. He is thought to have died on January 7 and the Indonesian Consulate General in Toronto received the news on January 8.
