JAKARTA - China's autonomous driving company WeRide recently announced that it has officially started its unmanned Robobus minibus service at Guangzhou International Bio Island.

Different from existing electric autonomous vehicles, this minibus removes all traditional controls such as the steering wheel, gas pedal or brake pedal.

According to Pandaily's report, WeRide has officially started operations of their unmanned Robobus service on Guangzhou International Bio Island.

WeRide has introduced a new service after two successful years of operating their Robotaxi commercial service (a first in China) in the region.

The Robobus is a pure electric vehicle and has a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour. This vehicle can achieve safe and stable unmanned driving service along urban roads, expressways and tunnels during rush hours and in inclement weather conditions.

After thorough research and investigation of daily traffic on Guangzhou Bio International Island, Robobus has opened two operating routes in the first phase and will further offer services across the island.

Robobus operates seven days a week, Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 22.00 local time while on Saturday and Sunday the bus operates from 9.00 to 18.00.

Passengers can view the real-time location and running status of the vehicle in their “WeRide Go” app.

Robobus vehicles will initially have volunteers who will help first-time passengers to understand and familiarize themselves with how autonomous vehicles work.

Meanwhile, the WeRide support center will monitor the vehicle in real-time. The bus also has a brake button located inside for emergency situations.
