UI Researcher: Tumang Metal Crafts Become An Important Part In Boyolali Regency So Protective Efforts Are Needed

JAKARTA - The research team from the University of Indonesia (UI) encourages craftsmen in an effort to preserve metal craft art in Tumang Village, Cepogo District because it is an important part of Boyolali Regency, Central Java Province.

"Tumang metal craft art is an important part in Boyolali Regency so efforts are needed to protect, develop, foster, and utilize metal crafts," said the UI research team, Widhyasmaramurti, in an audience with the Boyolali Regent M Said Hidayat, at the Boyolali Regent's Office. , Thursday.

Widhyasmaramurti said the metal craftsmanship in Tumang, Boyolali Regency has been widely known by local and foreign people. The Tumang metal craft has also been designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTB) by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek).

"One of the efforts emphasized by him is the regeneration of Tumang craftspeople by the younger generation," he said.

According to him, regeneration in the form of teaching is part of the official curriculum, in the sense that it is taught in a structured manner in schools both through extracurricular and general knowledge through local content in Javanese.

Meanwhile, the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) UI, Bondan Kanumoyoso, said that his party supports the regeneration of Tumang Boyolali craft craftsmen.

"The potential in Boyolali Regency is extraordinary. This is one of the extraordinary local wisdoms and now we are trying to bring it back up," he said.

Meanwhile, the Regent of Boyolali, M. Said Hidayat, welcomed the efforts to preserve Tumang's craft art. Through the Department of Education and Culture (Disdikbud) of Boyolali Regency, it is hoped that metal crafts can continue to be preserved by the next generation.

"This will be able to maintain. The regeneration of what is our goal to maintain the existence of Tumang metal crafts will not remain in name. However, Tumang metal crafts will be maintained sustainably through regeneration," said the Regent.

Cepogo Boyolali Village has 9,093 people consisting of 3,033 Heads of Families (KK). Tumang is a copper craft center with 55 showroom outlets and 178 medium-large workshops with 2,000 business actors. There are many business actors in the village, it can be said that metal craft has become a people's industry that is internalized in the daily lives of the surrounding community.
