Traffic Corps Imposes Progressive Fines For Odd-Even Policy Violators Until January 8th

JAKARTA - The Traffic Corps (Korlantas) of the Police applies progressive fines to violators of the odd-even rule around tourist attractions during the Candlelight Operation and will continue after the 2022 Christmas and New Year holidays until January 8, 2021.

Acting (Plt) Head of Operations (Kabaops) Korlantas Polri, Grand Commissioner Dodi Darjanto said this policy was an effort to reduce community mobility during the Christmas and New Year holidays, in order to prevent the transmission of COVID-19, especially the Omicron variant.

"Progressive fines are only valid during Candlelight Operations until January 2, 2022, and will continue from January 3 to 8 for Enhanced Police Routine Activities (KRYD) in order to create conditions for security and public order," said Dodi, as quoted by Antara, Tuesday, 29 December.

Dodi did not specify a list of tourist locations that would apply the odd-even policy. However, the application of progressive fines for odd-even violators in tourist attractions is left to each regional police. Progressive fines apply to both two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles.

"It is left to the assessment of each Regional Police. Whether it is needed or not, because there are tourist areas that are not too crowded," he said.

In addition, said Dedi, the police will enforce the law through a mobile electronic traffic law enforcement (ETLE) system based on artificial intelligence (AI).

In addition, he said, the Traffic Police of Polri will also take direct action against vehicles that commit serious violations that have the potential to cause traffic accidents, until the victim dies, such as violating the maximum speed limit, using cellphones while driving, trucks loaded with overload over dimension (ODOL), and others.

"This action is specifically on arterial roads, tourist areas, and toll roads," he said.

Dodi added, on New Year's Eve, the National Police enforced the closure of a number of road sections or "crowd-free night" (CFN) from December 31 at 22.00 to January 1 2022 at 04.00 western Indonesia time, in the DKI Jakarta area.

A number of areas will be closed, including Sudirman-Thamrin Street, Kemang area, Bulungan and Barito areas, Senopati-Gunawarman-SCBD, Asia Afrika Street, Kota Tua, East Flood Canal, Kemayoran, Kelapa Gading, to Monas.

Officers only allow special vehicles to pass such as ambulances, local residents and hotel visitors at the location of the closure can still pass.

"People are advised not to celebrate New Year's Eve, stay at home with their families and maintain health protocols," said Dodi.
