CIANJUR - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Cianjur, West Java, noted that two suspension bridges in the southern area of Cianjur had broken due to being swept away by river currents. As a result, the activities of residents in five villages in the Cidaun sub-district were completely paralyzed because there were no alternative roads.
Secretary of BPBD Cianjur, Rudi Labis said that the breaking of the two suspension bridges, which are the main access links between villages and sub-districts, occurred early Friday morning, due to the swift water of the Cimaragang River that stretches in Cidaun District, when heavy rain fell with high intensity since the evening.
"It's been raining heavily since night until early morning, making the water debit in the Cimaragang River continue to overflow and the current becomes heavy. As a result, the suspension bridge that stands above the river breaks, thus making the activities of residents from five villages completely paralyzed," he said, quoted by Antara, Friday, December 24.
He explained that the two suspension bridges, the Datar Bolang Bridge and Cisarakan which connect the villages of Neglasari, Cibuluh, Cimaragang, Karangwangi and Degreepawitan, broke up with the bridge foundation being mostly carried away by the river current, so that the main access for residents was lost.
His party has coordinated with related agencies to build emergency bridges so that residents in five villages are not isolated because these bridges are the main access for residents to carry out activities, especially economic activities.
"We have coordinated with the relevant agencies to immediately build an emergency bridge, before rebuilding the broken bridge. We hope that residents can return to their activities after the temporary bridge is built, while waiting for it to be rebuilt," he said.
The Head of Degreepawitan Village, Heri Kuswanto, said that due to the collapse of the two main access bridges, the activities of residents in five villages were completely paralyzed because there were no alternative roads other than the two bridges.
"Now residents are forced to cross rivers where the water is fast when there is a need to sell crops or other needs. We hope that an emergency bridge will soon be built because residents are challenging death when they want to move," he said.
