"At 14.30 WIB there was rain accompanied by strong winds in several areas in Jember Regency which caused several trees to fall towards the road, causing traffic jams," said Secretary of the Jember Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Heru Widagdo, quoted by Antara, Thursday, December 23.
He mentioned five sub-districts that were affected by the strong winds, namely Arjasa, Pakusari, Balung, Jenggawah and Kalisat sub-districts.
At least nine houses were damaged, one mosque was slightly damaged, and one warehouse was heavily damaged.
"The strong winds also caused dozens of trees to fall and two families had to flee to their relatives because their houses were damaged by strong winds," he said.
Heru explained that in Arjasa District, eight trees had fallen with a diameter of 50-70 cm on the road, causing traffic to come to a complete standstill.
In Patemon Village, Pakusari District, strong winds caused seven houses to be slightly damaged and two houses moderately damaged, then the Al-Ikhwan Mosque was slightly damaged, a tobacco warehouse was heavily damaged, and a tree fell which caused traffic jams.
In Balung, Jenggawah and Kalisat sub-districts, several fallen trees were recorded which caused power outages and total traffic jams.
"The Disaster Management Rapid Response Team (TRC) immediately went to a number of locations affected by strong winds and evacuated a fallen tree that was crossing the middle of the road," he said.
Previously, one person died and several houses were damaged due to strong winds that occurred in seven locations in Jember Regency on Saturday, December 18 afternoon.
