JAKARTA - Komnas Perempuan Commissioner Veryanto Sitohang said cases of sexual violence in Indonesia, especially against women, were dominated by cases that occurred from the private sphere. That is, the perpetrators are people in the immediate environment of the victim.
"Based on Komnas Perempuan's Annual Records (Catahu) in 2021, there were 1,074 cases of perpetrators with boyfriend status, then there were ex-girlfriends, then relatives or relatives," said Veryanto Sitohang via the IJRS TV YouTube channel, Antara, Friday, December 10.
Previously in 2020, Komnas Perempuan's Catahu data showed that boyfriends were the most frequent perpetrators of violence, even reaching 1320. Then, followed by biological fathers with 618 cases.
Through his observations of the data, Veryanto assesses that the existence of safe spaces for women from their immediate environment is increasingly doubtful.
“People who recognize the victim are the perpetrators of sexual violence. I think the safe space for women, which should have started from the closest house, is doubtful," he said.
In addition, Veryanto also said that the current form of sexual violence does not only target sexuality, but also in other fields, such as torture and murder.
Then, she explained some of the obstacles that are often experienced by women victims of sexual violence in seeking justice.
According to him, victims are often prohibited from reporting cases because their experiences are considered disgraceful, and there are even victims who are intimidated by the perpetrators.
Women who are forced to remain silent like that, said Veryanto, will experience prolonged depression and possibly commit suicide, as in the latest case experienced by Novia Widyasari.
The next obstacle is that victims are often burdened with finding evidence and taking action on cases that are not victim-oriented.
"The questions given by law enforcement officers, from the police to the courts, actually made the victim fear and traumatized so that he did not want to continue reporting," explained Veryanto Sitohang.
He also hopes that such obstacles can be immediately overcome by the relevant parties, especially law enforcement officers who are more oriented to the point of view of victims of sexual violence.
