JAKARTA - The Minister of Manpower (Menaker) Ida Fauziyah explained the need for the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards (SKKNI) for spa workers, karaoke guides and workers in the beauty sector such as salons. SKKNI can dismiss the slanted views of these professions.

"Being a karaoke guide and spa therapist is a halal profession. Oblique views on this profession can be answered with clear certificates and standards," said Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah in a written statement, Thursday, December 9.

He said, these jobs are equivalent to other professions and require protection and competency standards in the face of competition in the labor market.

He hopes that with the SKKNI, wages for spa workers, karaoke guides and beauty workers such as salons will adjust to the level of competence. With better wages, workers will not have to rely on tips from visitors.

Ida also warned that the presence of individuals who abuse the three professions does not mean the type of work is bad.

"The good or bad of a job depends on the intentions of each worker. The government's job is to provide standards and protection," he said.

The Ministry of Manpower previously launched the SKKNI for spa workers, karaoke guides and beauty workers (salons) in an event held at the Work Training Development Center (BBPLK) Bekasi, West Java, last Wednesday (8/12).

SKKNI is the formulation of work ability covering aspects of knowledge, skills, and/or expertise as well as work attitudes relevant to the implementation of duties and job requirements set. The SKKNI was developed in consultation with the relevant industry, to ensure the suitability of needs in the workplace.
