PEKANBARU - A honey farmer group found a dead sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) in the People's Forest Park (Tahura) Minas, Siak Regency, Riau, with its legs entangled in a trap rope.

"After being reported by the honey farmer group, the Riau BBKSDA Team immediately checked. When it was found the bear was caught in a trap rope," said Head of Technical Division of the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA), Mahfud in Pekanbaru, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, November 10..

According to him, on Tuesday, November 9, his party received news of the death of the male bear from the community, from a honey farmer group.

The bear's death was thought to be due to starvation. As a result of their entangled legs, the bear can't move to find food so it starves and dies.

"Our assumption is that the bear starved to death because its legs were entangled and it couldn't find food," said Mahfud.

From the results of the examination from the medical team, the bear was predicted to have died about two or three days earlier.

For further efforts, he said again, the medical team will carry out a necropsy to determine the cause of death.

"A team of veterinarians has been dispatched to carry out a necropsy and determine the cause of the bear's death," said Mahfud.
