Regarding The Schedule For Holding The 2024 General Election, KPS: The Government Will Hand It Over To The KPU

JAKARTA - The government and the General Elections Commission (KPU) have yet to agree on a schedule for the 2024 election. Deputy IV of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), Juri Andriantoro, said that the government handed over the decision to organize the election schedule to the KPU.

Furthermore, the Juri said that as an election organizer, the KPU has the right to determine the final decision regarding the schedule for the once-every five-year democracy party.

"Regarding the election schedule, the government has already given its views. But the government already knows that the one who will determine and decide the 2024 election schedule is the election organizer (in this case) the KPU", he said, at the Presidential Staff Office, Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, quoted on Saturday, November 6th.

Therefore, said Juri, regarding the election schedule, it is better to wait for the KPU's decision at the end. Nevertheless, Juri said that the government had given its views and the House of Representatives had also held a meeting to determine its formulation.

"So we'll just have to wait because the government has a view, the House of Representatives has met and discussed it, how will the formula wait for the KPU at the end", he said.

For your information, until now there has been no agreement between the government and the KPU regarding the schedule for holding the 2024 election.

Even so, on the one hand, the KPU proposed that the voting day for the 2024 General Election fall on February 21, 2024, while the government proposed May 15, 2024.

Previously, Deputy Chairperson of Commission II of the House of Representatives, Saan Mustopa, hoped that the government and the KPU could immediately agree on a schedule for the 2024 election legacy. According to Saan, if during this trial the 2024 election schedule has not been determined, it is predicted that it will be delayed until the appointment of KPU members for the 2022-2027 period. Saan said he was worried that it would burden the new KPU commissioner.

Meanwhile, the KPU said that the burden of organizing elections would be too heavy if the 2024 election voting was held on May 15, 2024. Meanwhile, the regional elections were held in November 2024.

KPU member Pramono Ubaid Tanthowi said that in principle the KPU was not fixated on the date set for polling day. According to him, what is important for the KPU is that each stage of the election has sufficient time.

According to him, if the election day for the 2024 election is held in May 2024 and the election is in November 2024, the time from polling day to the initial stages of the regional election is very short.
