Jakarta Is Prepared To Anticipate Floods During Year-End High Rainfall

JAKARTA - Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Riza Patria emphasized that the DKI Provincial Government has anticipated the rainy season related to the potential for Jakarta floods. The BMKG previously issued a warning of the potential for high rainfall at the end of the year until January 2022.

"The provincial government does not only anticipate, there are plans, programs related to flood prevention, handling and control until later evacuation, we have prepared everything, the post, logistics, officers, there is a circular, everything is ready. But again, about flooding, about rain discharge, about weather, this is beyond our control as humans. According to the BMKG, the discharge is getting higher and higher, for that we all need to be prepared," said Riza Patria to reporters, Thursday, November 4. .

Flood management according to him must be done thoroughly. Riza also said that budget needs are an important point to ensure that the flood management program goes according to plan.

"Regarding the flood, the intensity of the rain continues to increase. So far, we still have limitations regarding funding. Because this flood management program requires very large funds. But that doesn't mean that we then give up, even with all the limitations, we need to continue collaborating with all parties, with the private sector, with the community, we build positive synergies so that we can jointly prevent, overcome and control floods in Jakarta, "said Riza.

As previously reported, the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati warned of the potential for natural disasters due to high rainfall in late 2021 and early 2022.

Dwikorita conveyed that rainfall conditions are predicted to occur from November, December 2021, and continue in January and February 2022.

The BMKG said that the Indonesian region has weather conditions that are influenced by the interaction of the Asian and Australian continents so that out-of-cycle weather changes can occur instantly and suddenly.

"This means that the estimate could suddenly change, because something suddenly changed elsewhere," said Dwikorita.

Dwikorita gave an example of the Jabodetabek flood incident in January 2020 that had actually been detected a week earlier. But then the intensity of the rain exceeded what was expected.

This is because the BMKG has carried out satellite monitoring of sea level in the Pacific which is currently colder than normal.

On the other hand, the sea surface temperature in the Indonesian archipelago is warmer than usual. This causes air pressure in the Pacific region to be higher, and Indonesia to have lower air pressure.

"Rainfall that should have fallen in one month's installments, but due to the influence of regional phenomena and the rush of air, finally the volume of rainfall that should have fallen in a month can fall in 24 hours," said Dwikorita.

Therefore, it is very important to understand that disasters occur because of the environment.

"How can it not be flooded if everything is filled with asphalt and concrete, the trees are cut down, so that the infiltration of water immediately becomes blocked. This is what causes a disaster if it rains heavily within a few hours, and the environment cannot absorb immediately due to natural damage.
