JAKARTA - Spokesperson for the COVID-19 Vaccination of the Ministry of Health, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said that diabetes dominates comorbidities in COVID-19 patients who were reported to have died based on the situation in Indonesia in October.

"The results of the report from the Data and Information Center (Pusdatin) of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia as of October 30, 2021, cases of death based on comorbid diabetes were the highest at 560 cases," said Nadia, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, November 3.

The second comorbid or comorbid disease after diabetes was hypertension reaching 543 cases, pneumonia 345 cases, heart disorders 284 cases and kidney 121 cases.

Nadia said comorbid diabetes in COVID-19 patients who died experienced patients with an age range above 60 years as many as 267 patients, 46 to 59 years as many as 247 patients, 31 to 45 years as many as 40 patients, 18 to 30 years four patients and zero to one. year two patients.

Diabetes which is also the second comorbid after hypertension experienced by patients who were confirmed positive for COVID-19 was 2,191 people.

"Hypertension is still the highest in 2,958 patients, the second is diabetes," he said.

Other comorbidities that also increase the chance of contracting SARS-CoV-2 which causes COVID-19 are pneumonia as many as 1,354 patients and heart as many as 998 patients.

The Ministry of Health's Balitbangkes informs that diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels. Glucose is the main energy source for human body cells.

Glucose that accumulates in the blood due to not being absorbed by the body's cells properly can cause various disorders of the body's organs. "If diabetes is not controlled properly, various complications can arise that endanger the patient's life," said Nadia.
