JAKARTA - Bogor-based indie punk band The Jansen has officially announced their fifth full-length album titled Romantisasi Impulsif.
The latest work, which is led by Cintarama Bani Satria and Adji Pamungkas, is positioned as the conclusion of a series of musical trilogies previously opened by the album "Banal Semakin Binal" in 2022 and continued by "Durja Bersahaja" in 2024.
As a way to the fifth full-length album, The Jansen has released the first single titled "bila cinta adalah sebuah propaganda (wo ai ni)". Meanwhile, the 12 numbers in the album "Romantisasi Impulsif" just aired digitally on Wednesday, July 22.
Physical releases in the form of vinyl, CD, and cassette tapes are also prepared in collaboration with the international labels P-Vine Records from Japan and Miles Records from Malaysia.
The "Impulsive Romanticism" carries a unique approach to the story. The Jansen compiled this album like a film scenario structure that has a division of scenes, conflict points, climax dynamics, to the closing part.
All the tracks in this album weave the fictional story of two lovers named Johan and Marni who struggle to maintain a relationship in the midst of social reality and structural poverty.
Johan's character is portrayed as a young man from a wealthy family who fell into poverty, while Marni is a working-class citizen from the start.
Instead of presenting a typical romance, The Jansen highlights how bureaucratic policies and economic inequality separate the living space of the little people. Through their lyrics, the group acts as a messenger who records the pulse of life from the corners of marginal cities.
Adji said that this narrative approach was deliberately designed so that the album was not just an audio consumption, but also opened up opportunities for visual exploration.
According to him, the lyrics and emotional dynamics in this fifth album are very mature to be adapted to the big screen.
"We want to offer another reading of the album. If this album can be made into a movie," said Adji in his statement, Thursday, July 23.
The idea was welcomed positively by Bani who considered the adaptation of a music album into a film as an interesting experimental space for the current creative industry to explore.
According to him, the family background that is close to the world of cinema indirectly shapes the style of changing songs and visual rhythms in their works.
"Yes. The pattern of adapting a film from a novel is already a lot, and it's fun. I think the music album can also be," said Bani.
In terms of sound design, "Romantisasi Impulsif" shows a wider and eclectic musical exploration. If the album "Durja Bersahaja" is full of lo-fi and thick fuzz, this new album combines The Jansen's signature colors - such as wet reverb and chorus guitar riffs - with world music ornaments.
Listeners will find touches of Arabic scales, flamenco-style Spanish guitar playing, to pentatonic scales.
The album took years to complete. The lyrics of the song were designed by Adji since 2022, while the musical arrangement was worked on with Bani at their headquarters, Jansen HQ.
The recording process began in 2025 with the involvement of supporting musicians such as Daryl Gema on drums, S Yonatan and Andreas Yendra on guitars, and background vocals from Ayu Muthia Zahra.
With the completion of the album "Romantisasi Impulsif", The Jansen officially ended the trilogy of their music. Although they have not determined the direction of their next musical steps, the duo from Bogor admitted that they enjoyed the creative process which always started from a space of experimentation and uncertainty.
"We are always happy to make something with a new approach. We like to explore, work on something that starts from mischief," concluded Tata.
