JAKARTA - The vocalist and bassist of the legendary progressive rock band Rush, Geddy Lee, made a surprising confession regarding one of the most iconic songs in the history of rock music, "Tom Sawyer".
The song, which was released in 1981, was almost kicked out of the album "Moving Pictures" because the recording process was considered very torturous.
In a recent interview on Rick Beato's YouTube channel, Lee revealed that he had felt very disgusted with the song. When asked why "Tom Sawyer" could be so attached and resonate strongly in the hearts of listeners, Lee actually admitted that he was the last person to realize the great potential of the song.
"I was the last person to know because when we finished the song in the studio, we were very frustrated. It was a very difficult song to make and difficult to mix. Every stage of recording is always plagued by problems. And in the end, I was so fed up with that damn song, I didn't even want to put it on the album," said Geddy Lee.
Fortunately, the ego did not win. "Tom Sawyer" was still included in the album pocket *Moving Pictures* and transformed into one of the pillars of Rush's career success.
The song exploded on the radio, dominating MTV's rotation, until it eventually entered the prestigious Grammy Hall of Fame. Lee even laughed at his past decision, which he considered very ridiculous.
"So, can you imagine how stupid it is? Like, let's not put our most popular song on the album," Lee joked.
On the other hand, Rush has just completed their first appearance since 2015 at the Juno Awards in Canada. This performance was an emotional moment because the position of the late Neil Peart (drums), who died of brain cancer in early 2020, is now replaced by Anika Nilles.
Throughout the performance, Rush paid emotional tribute by displaying old video footage of Peart on the big screen.
Good news for fans, the Canadian rock unit has also officially announced a large-scale world tour schedule in 2027. The band confirmed a total of 24 performances spread across 13 countries across the UK, Europe, and South America.
This tour also marks their first appearance on the European stage since 2013, as well as their first visit to South America after an absence of 17 years.
