JAKARTA - Jazz Goes To Campus (JGTC) which has been synonymous with a music event belonging to the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia, is trying a new step that is more inclusive.

With a new format titled "The City Series", JGTC was brought "out of the cage" and will be held at the Grand Theater of Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, April 25 next week.

Candra Darusman as the initiator of the early JGTC in the mid-1970s said that the festival outside the campus was an effort to expand the audience reach, as well as strengthen its position as one of the jazz festivals that continue to grow without abandoning its artistic roots.

"On the one hand, JGTC on campus is still running. But on the other hand, we are also making series of activities in the city, especially at Taman Ismail Marzuki," said Candra at a press conference in Senayan, Central Jakarta, Friday, April 17.

As for the names that will be presented, among others, Erwin Gutawa, Tohpati, Ari Renaldi, Adra Karim, Bandung Jazz Orchestra, and the collaboration of Alonzo & Rose Maryjane.

This JGTC series will also involve elements of Betawi ethnic music, considering that this event is also intended to welcome Jakarta's 500th anniversary which will fall next year.

"In this series, various branches of jazz will be presented. Because jazz can be said to be a genus, there are many species, there is swing, jazz-pop, jazz-rock, fusion, to ethic-jazz," said Candra.

"For ethic-jazz later, we will raise Betawi music with jazz," he added.

In addition to musical performances, this JGTC series will also be a space for cross-generational dialogue. This concept is designed to present jazz that is more inclusive, contextual, and close to the dynamics of the city and the younger generation.

Talkshows will be presented as openers that enrich the audience's perspective before enjoying a musical performance - making the experience not only artistic, but also reflective.

The talk show session will feature Rano Karno, Candra Darusman, Chico Hindarto, Sri Hanuraga, and Agus Basuni as speakers, where the theme is: "Achievements Towards 50 Years of JGTC and Hopes for the Future".
