JAKARTA - Unclaimed royalties, or royalties that cannot be claimed, are one of the main problems in the management of music royalties in Indonesia.
As for the music royalties that have been collected, they cannot be distributed to the creator or copyright holder, when a work is not known to its creator, or is known to the creator but is not registered with the Collective Management Agency (LMK).
For the first time, the National Collective Management Agency (LMKN) finally announced royalties of Rp70 billion still stagnated and could not be distributed.
"Rp70 billion is our prediction to cover tens of thousands of copyright holders who have never been published. This data consists of millions of data on the use of songs, so we really need time to verify these creations and their creators," said LMKN Commissioner Ahmad Ali Fahmi at a press conference at the LMKN office, Kuningan, South Jakarta, Tuesday, January 13.
From the amount of royalties that have not been claimed, Ali Fahmi revealed that his party found a wrong creator who was entitled to receive royalties of Rp. 200 million, but had not been distributed for years.
"One example of the unclaimed royalty recipient, I may not be allowed to mention his name first, but I will give you a clue, there is a royalty worth almost 200 million. The song is a Javanese song, and it has never been published," said Ali.
"I don't know if he is from East Java or Central Java, but this song is a kind of regional song, but it has never been informed that he has the royalty," he continued.
Regarding the mechanism for distributing unclaimed royalties, Ali said that LMKN would further discuss to determine the most appropriate way to hand it over to the creator or copyright holder.
"As for the claim process, we are providing the mechanism. And in the near future it will be announced, including whether or not the right holder becomes a member of a certain LMK. So for this, we will inform you more later," concluded Ali Fahmi.
