JAKARTA - It has been three decades since Benjamin Sueb died, but his works, especially music, are still being displayed and enjoyed by Jakarta residents.
Benjamin's works that are easy to find cannot be separated from the many groups that still dedicate themselves to performing the late's songs on various stages. Sueb Band is one of them.
Through a simple performance at a cafe in Joglo, West Jakarta on Saturday, August 16 evening, the Sueb Band celebrated 22 years of musical travel as Benjamin's tribute group.
They performed popular songs of Benjamin in front of hundreds of people who still memorized and enjoyed the works of the Betawi art icon.
Moreover, Joe, vocalist and leader of the Sueb Band, was able to imitate Benjamin's vocal character which is thick with the Betawi dialect.
"The figure of Babeh Benjamin can't change, he's multitalent. People who can do anything," Joe said of Benjamin's irreplaceable figure, when met by VOI before his appearance.
"Maybe the sound is similar, people say, but you don't believe it or it's similar. Because nothing can play with him," added Joe, with the thick Betawi dialect.

As a Betawi Child, even though he has no blood relationship with the legend, Joe has his own pride when he can continue to introduce Benjamin's works to younger listeners. There has been no boredom over the past 22 years.
"Incidentally, ane Betawi child, in the Sueb Band there are two Betawi children, who want to preserve Betawi songs, whose accent is Betawi accent," said Joe.
Regarding the hopes of the band in the future, Joe said that one of the dreams of the band's Sueb was to perform Benjamin's songs with the children of the deceased.
"I want to collaborate with his late son Babeh. Because the son of the late Babeh, like Bang Beno and Bang Biem, is still performing and also playing his own songs," said Joe.
"God willing, if there is sustenance, there is the same work, he wants to collect with his son Babeh Benjamin," he concluded.
