JAKARTA - jazz soloist Laufey reveals how music has influenced his life since childhood. Born and growing in Iceland, the 26-year-old singer-songwriter says classical music has shaped his personality as a child to a teenager.
Learning classical music since childhood, Laufey said that his daily life goes by following the standard rules.
"I have a very complicated relationship with rules and boundaries, because I'm like a following of chronic rules as I grow up," Laufey said as a guest on Stanley tucci's Cards On The Table.
"I'm like a good classic, pretty much practicing the sound ladder, and following the rules of life and music," he added. I mean, I didn't drink (of liquor) until I was 21 years old. I actually followed it, even my mother said, Drink. What's up with you? Are you weird? He really asked me that.
The 'From The Start' singer even admitted not to the school dance party, like many teenagers in general. But then, his move to the United States to continue his music education at Berklee College of Music in Boston changed his life 180 degrees.
"And then when I moved from Iceland to Boston for college, and suddenly for the first time in my life, I was in a jazz school, I was in a contemporary music school, not a classic music school, and I felt embarrassed," Laufey said.

"Suddenly, all the things I believe in about music and life are completely destroyed. I don't live with my family anymore, I start dating and drinking. But for me, it's like a big change."
Laufey's introduction to jazz has also shaped his current music career. He even abandoned a lot of values he knew while studying classical music.
"It's the same with music. I don't follow classical music rules. I don't play sounds that are literally placed in front of me on paper. I had a moment where everything changed for me both as a woman and a musician where suddenly I started writing music, and I started a bit breaking the rules. And that's when I started to find success as an artist," he said.
"It feels like you can almost conclude, where things have changed for me. And there are very different moments when I realize that actually if you don't know what you're doing, you might do something right."
