Criticism Of Grammy Injustice To Beyonce, Jay-Z: It Doesn't Make Sense

JAKARTA - Rapper and music producer Jay-Z voiced scathing criticism of the Grammys. This was conveyed when he received the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the 2024 Grammy Awards held at Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles, United States on Sunday, February 4 local time.

In his victory speech on stage, Jay-Z questioned the treatment his wife, Beyonce, who never won in the Album of the Year category.

"He (Beyonce) has more Grammys than anyone else, and has never won Album of the Year. Even according to your own metric, it doesn't work," Jay-Z said on the Grammy stage.

"Think about it, the Grammys are the most, never winning Album of the Year. It doesn't make sense," he said.

Jay-Z saw the inconsistency and unfair behavior of the Recording Academy against black musicians.

"We want you to do it right, at least do it right," he said.

Jay-Z also referred to Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff's boycott of the 1989 Grammys, because rap categories were not shown on television at the time. He also noted a boycott that had been done when DMX released two albums No.1 on the charts but was not nominated.

Some of you may have been robbed. Some of you are not included in that category," Jay-Z said.

"This is music and it is based on opinion," he added.

At the end of his speech, Jay-Z called what he said a truth.

"When I'm nervous, I tell the truth."
