JAKARTA - Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury thought the song Somebody to Love was cooler than Bohemian Rhapsody, according to a roadie who once worked with Queen.
Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio after Bohemian Rhapsody was named the 'greatest song of all time' by more than 6,500 listeners, former Queen Uncovered roadie and writer Peter Hince remembers exactly how Queen created Bohemian Rhapsody and Mercury's thoughts on the song.
“The band was recording [the album] Night At the Opera and we went around to all the different studios in London and did something in each one so I listened to bits and pieces of Bohemian Rhapsody,” speaking to Greatest Hits Radio he explained.
"But I didn't hear it all for some time. I remember hearing the opera and thinking it would be an introductory recording for a live performance – I had no idea it was a song!” he continued.
“The video is arguably what helped it become so big in the UK… and the other thing is that, unfortunately, Freddie is no longer around and it's one of his legacies that a piece of music is still something that people find very emotional.”

“Also, no one had ever done anything like this before and probably hasn't been done since – with all the technology that exists now it's easier to get certain studio effects, whereas with Queen it was all about taking a lot of time and being very innovative. So I think part of [its appeal] is the fact that it took a really long time to do and it was a real labor of love for Fred.'
However, Peter then revealed something rather surprising.
“…Freddie actually said Somebody to Love was a cooler song than Bohemian Rhapsody. He felt that as a pure work of songwriting, it was better," he concluded.
