JAKARTA - Wolfgang Van Halen admitted that he would never forget the moment when he performed his late father's song at a tribute concert for Taylor Hawkins recently.
Eddie Van Halen's son played three Van Halen On Fire, Hot For Teacher, and Panama at two concerts in September with Dave Grohl on bass, Josh Freese on drums and Justin Hawkins from The Drakness on vocals.
In a new interview with Pablo from Minneapolis, Minnesota 93X radio station, Wolfgang recalled the tribute concert to Taylor Hawkins.
"I will never forget that moment. At the same time, it passed so quickly, I can't even remember it. It's all about energy... It's really crazy. It's one of the most special opportunities of my life," Wolfgang explained.
Asked if it was easy or difficult for him to play Van Halen's songs in such circumstances, this was Wolfgang's answer.
"It's more difficult, emotionally. I don't think people realize how long I haven't heard Van Halen's music anymore. It's a difficult song. But it feels like the right thing to do right now. Taylor must be very, very excited. From the first time I met him he came to Van Halen's show in 2012. He's the coolest and most friendly man. He left a very big impression on me."
As for how he ended up taking part in Taylor Hawkins' tribute concert, Wolfgang said that it began with a message made by Dave Grohl.
"I can't believe it's him. I have to call [Guitarist Foo Fighters] Chris Shiflett, because I just finished a chat on his podcast. I was like, 'Hey, does anyone pick me up or is this Dave?' He said, 'Yeah, it's Dave. You have to reply'."
