JAKARTA - Queen became the first band to be honored in British coins. This series of special coin collections was released by Royal Mint on Monday, January 20.
The tribute came after Britain's Royal Mail (national postal service) announced plans to mark the band's 50th anniversary with a postage stamp that will be released in July.
The coins were made by Royal Mint designer Chris Facey, a big fan of the band which was represented by Freddie Mercury (vocals), Brian May (guitar), John Deacon (bass) and Roger Taylor (drums).
"My first memory of Queen is hearing Bohemian Rhapsody in the movie Wayne's World, and I've been a huge fan ever since," he told ITV.
Each coin represents details of the band's musical instruments, including the Mercury piano keys marked on the first note of the Bohemian Rhapsody song.
Guitarist Brian May says on his website: "This was a big 'Who could have imagined it?' Moment? For us. When we started as Queen, even the first rung we saw was out of reach. To make our band known and our music celebrated in this way was touching, a real honor. "
"Incredible, all this took our band by storm," said drummer Roger Taylor. "I feel like I'm completely worth my time."
Although these coins cannot be used as legal tender, they are presented in a range of options and prices. More details can be seen at royalmint.com.
