Study: ABS Technology On Effective Motorcycles Prevent Accidents

JAKARTA - The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) feature on motorbikes is very important in helping prevent motorcycle accidents. This evidence is reinforced by the results of a study that shows significant benefits after being studied by the Civil Engineering and Community Service Unit and the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia or PolAR UI.

"If all motorbikes are equipped with ABS, as many as 8,000 people per year can avoid traffic accidents," said Head of the UI UI Police Study Team Tri Tjahjono, quoted from ANTARA, Monday, November 4.

According to the UI POLAR Study Team, the results showed that the use of ABS had the opportunity to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents by 24 percent or could prevent one in four motorcycle accidents that occurred in Indonesia.

Based on Integrated Road Safety Management System (IRSMS) data, in 2023 there were 115,518 traffic accidents involving motorcycles or almost double that of 71,072 cases in 2017. The UI POLAR study team used the 2016-2022 accident data from IRSMS to make projections regarding the potential reduction of accidents from the use of ABS on motorcycles.

Because the accident data in Indonesia does not include information regarding traces of motorcycle braking, the team conducted an analysis using the Road Accident Sampling System India (RASSI) data-based projection method.

Tjahjono said that India was chosen as a reference because it has similar characteristics to Indonesia in several key variables, including traffic density, road infrastructure type, level of awareness regarding driving safety, and number of two-wheeled vehicles.

Simulations of the UI POLAR team show significant benefits from using ABS on motorbikes to reduce the possibility of accidents such as rear collisions, hitting pedestrians, and accidents in advance.

Based on the simulation, the use of ABS is estimated to be able to reduce up to 38 percent of rear-hit accidents.

"ABS savings will make vehicles braking more stable," said Tjahjono.

ABS is a braking system designed to maintain safety by preventing vehicles from locking the wheels when drivers brake suddenly.

Based on the results of a study on the benefits of using ABS, the government is advised to revise Government Regulation Number 55 of 2012 concerning Vehicles and make specific provisions regarding the use of ABS to reduce the risk of traffic accidents involving motorcycles.
