JAKARTA - Xiaomi is developing a new safety technology capable of warning drivers when vehicle speed is considered to have the potential to cause accidents even though the car is still below the legal speed limit.

This information was revealed in a patent document titled Methods, Devices, Vehicles, Storage Media, and Products of the Vehicle Excess Speed Warning Program published on November 14, 2025, as reported by Carnewschina, Saturday, November 15, 2025.

In the document, it is explained that the system will monitor the speed of the vehicle based on the conditions of the surrounding traffic. The sensor will identify the object in the vicinity, determine one of the objects as a reference, then calculate the relative speed of the vehicle against the object.

If the relative speed crosses a predetermined threshold, the system will alert the driver. Xiaomi considers that conventional speed warning systems only work when the driver exceeds the legal speed limit.

In fact, dangerous conditions can also occur when the vehicle is traveling much faster than the traffic flow, especially in crowded areas.

For example, in schools, dormitories, canteens, tourist attractions, or construction zones, where traffic density has the potential to make vehicles move slowly.

In a situation like this, speeds that are still below the legal limit can still pose a risk if they are too high compared to other vehicles. This relative warning threshold can be adjusted according to road characteristics.

Residential areas generally require a lower threshold, while toll roads or urban areas can use higher thresholds. For warning delivery, the system supports visual displays through both medium and voice control screens through text to voice features so that drivers can immediately find out about potential hazards.

Xiaomi's proposed technology is designed to read traffic conditions more dynamically taking into account relative speeds, not just absolute speeds compared to legal boundaries.
