JAKARTA - The MG5 sedan model became a byword after obtaining zero-star results in the safety and security test from the Australation of the New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) in 2023.

Since then, Morris Garage (MG) has invested to increase the safety element on the model in order to provide a sense of security for its users.

Recently, ANCAP again conducted a hit test on MG5 by getting better results, namely a three star. Even though it didn't get the highest score, this proves that MG has fixed a number of things so that the car has a better level of safety.

ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Carla Hoorweg said this result was rapid progress for the car but there were still several things that needed to be addressed in order to get maximum results.

"Although this score is an increase, it is important for consumers and manufacturers to realize that there is still limited safety in this model. Moreover, there are other vehicles on the market that offer more resilient safety performance," Carla was quoted as saying on the official ANCAP website, Wednesday, June 4.

MG5 managed to get good results in four tests, namely the Adult Occupant Protection which rose to 62 percent from 37 percent, the Child Occupant Protection to 68 percent from 58 percent, the Vulnerable Road Use Protection by 65 percent from 42 percent, and Safety Assist now 59 percent from 13 percent.

These results are thanks to a number of improvements presented at MG5, including seatbelt pretentioners which are now standard.

Then also presented are accident avoidance features that rely on radar, such as Autonomous Braking and Lane Support System.

In addition, another aspect that has been improved is active safety devices with the presence of Autonomous Braking to optimize security for other road users such as pedestrians to cyclists.

Although the MG 5 has been improved, some safety limitations remain. For example, the lack of midwaterbags that play a role in protecting passengers during side clashes.

The model tested by ANCAP is MG5 produced November 2024 and went on sale for the Australian market this month.
