JAKARTA Memories of today, seven years ago, November 16, 2018, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), Susi Pudjiastuti, called on the Indonesian people to stop using plastic straws. This condition is because Susi considers straws and other plastic waste to be dangerous for the underwater ecosystem.

Previously, Susi was known to care about the Indonesian marine and fisheries world. He witnessed that the sea could prosper the people of Indonesia. The potential of the sea should be utilized optimally. However, the sea is threatened with waste.

Susi's presence as Minister of KKP was positively welcomed since 2014. Susi is seen as an Indonesian great woman figure. There is no doubt about Susi's knowledge of marine and fishery problems. His experience for years as a marine entrepreneur is behind it.

This condition makes Susi one step further to see the great potential of the Indonesian sea. He thought that Indonesia's marine wealth was great. The Indonesian people are even considered to be prosperous by utilizing the potential of the sea. However, he saw that other countries were taking advantage of Indonesia's marine potential.

Susi immediately carried out a breakthrough to enforce strict rules for illegal fishing thieves. Anyone who steals will be dealt with. The ship will be drowned. In particular, the sinking of the ship is covered and can be witnessed nationally.

Susi's studies bring maximum results. The study gave a deterrent effect to fish thieves. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) praised him. Even though other state officials criticized Susi's steps. The sinking of the ship has succeeded in keeping Indonesia's marine wealth awake.

Problems arise. However, not from fish thieves. Susi considered the problem of garbage filling the sea as a threat. The main thing is plastic can threaten underwater life. This condition made Susi also voice that the sea is not a trash can.

He appealed to the Indonesian people to no longer throw garbage into the sea. He asked the Indonesian people to jointly protect the sea. He also declared August 19 every year as Day of Sea on August 28, 2018.

"We use August 19 as a Day to Face the Sea. I hope this activity can be carried out more often. We want public awareness to make the sea not a trash can but a place that we face, love, and care for. That is the most important thing. Hopefully every city will commemorate this for the cleanliness of the beach. "

"But, because many are enthusiastic, there are more than 73 activities and many more. Of course today, as a sea builder, I as the archipelago express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to participants and cities who love and want to protect the sea that has carried out this activity," said Susi as quoted by the CNBC Indonesia website, August 21, 2018.

Susi's seriousness in keeping the sea continues. He keeps voicing so that the Indonesian people move to protect the sea from garbage. He also expressed a call to all Indonesian people to stop using plastic straws on November 16, 2018.

Susi emphasized that plastic straws are considered a threat to marine animals. He witnessed for himself how garbage such as straws could be a suffering for turtles. Susi will also fight so that in the future the place to eat and others will no longer use plastic straws.
