Previously, Yaqut was widely known as the General Chair of GP Ansor. He is also known as a brave figure. He often criticizes the government regarding the livelihoods of Muslims in Indonesia. This narrative made him an important figure who defends the rights of Muslims in Indonesia.

There is no doubt about the actions of Islamic organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) defending the lives of Indonesian Muslims. They often stand up for the interests of Muslims every time there is a problem. In fact, NU sometimes chooses to conflict with the government.

This portrait was once shown by Yaqut Cholil Qoumas. The Ansor GP Government is known to be vocal in drafting the Ministry of Religion's improper policies. A policy that sacrifices the lives of Muslims. Take for example when the Minister of Religion, Fachrul Razi, banned the use of cadres in government agencies.

Fachrul considers the use of cadar to be a symbol of radicalism. He wants radicalism not to thrive in Indonesia. Especially in government agencies. This condition made Yaqut speak up.

He strongly opposes the existing ban. Cadar is not a substantial thing that must be handled by the Ministry of Religion level. If you want to eliminate radicalism, then the point is to go straight to the ideology that is held, not towards appearance.

Yaqut's criticism was also agreed by many parties. Later President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) replaced Fachrul with Yaqut as Minister of Religion. The change was considered important. Jokowi believes that Yaqut can bring the wind of success in maintaining the unity and integrity of Indonesian religious communities.

Yaqut is also considered to be able to break the chain of the growth of radical religious groups in Indonesia. Everything so that religious people in Indonesia can live in peace and peace.

"Actually, a lot of things are done, but if you want to be summarized it is only a short sentence, namely how to make religion an inspiration, not aspiration. It can be broken down to many things, both how to relate between religious communities, inter-religious people. and we will see later there will definitely be breakthroughs from the Ministry of Religion which will be different from the previous times," Yaqut said in his inauguration as Minister of Religion as quoted by the BBC Indonesia website, December 24, 2020.

Yaqut's presence provides new energy for Jokowi's government. Yaqut also tried to convince the public that he was the person who continued to lead the Ministry of Religion. Yaqut began to initiate a new policy.

One of Yaqut's breakthroughs is to forbid the sale and purchase of positions within the Ministry of Religion on March 3, 2021. All of this was done by Yaqut as a step to prevent corruption. He also promised to supervise whether his subordinates were working.

He will immediately take action if any of his subordinates are corrupt. Yaqut also asked the KPK to help him in realizing the Ministry of Religion to be one of the clean government agencies in Indonesia.

"Transactionally, we strictly prohibit the sale and purchase of this position at the Ministry of Religion. For example, people move because they bribe the leadership. And we will monitor this properly down to a strict extent."

"We have implemented policies in the ranks of echelon I units in the process of rotation and mutation so that there is no transactional position. We really hope for support and supervision from the KPK," Yaqut said as quoted by the Ministry of Religion website, March 3, 2021.
