JAKARTA - The British Film Classification Board (BBFC) has confirmed that Todd Phillips' Joker is the film that has been the most complained about in 2019.

Released last year to critical acclaim, this DC film tells the story of the origins of Batman's foe. Joaquin Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, a mentally challenged man who later turns into the Clown Prince of Crime.

In its annual report, The BBFC reveals that the Joker received 20 complaints regarding the classification of films aged 15 years, the most of all films in 2019.

The complaints argue that the classification board should have classified the film as 18 and over, due to violent scenes. Meanwhile, a small proportion of the audience felt the film should be banned altogether.

However, even though the Joker featured a number of sticky violent scenes, the BBFC stated that the violent scenes in the film did not require the label '18 years and over'.

Last year, the BBFC received a total of 149 complaints. This amount is less than half the amount made in 2018.

Meanwhile, the film's cinematographer, Lawrence Sher, admits that he is worried that Joaquin Phoenix will be immersed in a deep soul while portraying this film. Not without reason, the role became famous in the past when Heath Ledger immersed himself in the character for The Dark Knight (2008).

Speaking to NME at BAFTA this year, Lawrence Sher revealed that he did have some concerns about Joaquin Phoenix's commitment to the role, especially given Heath Ledger's experience that ended his life just 6 months before The Dark Knight was released.
