Anne Hathaway Brings Her Love Story to Penelope in The Odyssey

JAKARTA - Anne Hathaway brings her own love experience when playing Penelope in The Odyssey. Her marriage to Adam Shulman helped the actress understand the figure of a woman who waited for her husband's return for 20 years.

E! News reported Wednesday, July 15, that Hathaway revealed this while attending the premiere of The Odyssey in New York City on July 14. In the film, Penelope is waiting for Odysseus, played by Matt Damon.

"I'm one of the luckiest people on the face of the earth. I met my soulmate, then we decided to get married and build a family," Hathaway said in a Live from E! broadcast.

The 43-year-old actress has been married to Shulman for almost 14 years. Hathaway said Damon also brought a similar experience from his marriage to Luciana Barroso.

"We play two characters who have a very deep love relationship knowing that such love is indeed possible," he said.

Shulman's support is also seen outside of film affairs. The couple is now expecting their third child.

When she arrived on the red carpet, Hathaway called her pregnancy the best "accessory" of the night.

"This microphone is really good, but I prefer my accessories," he said, holding his stomach.

Hathaway and Shulman previously had two sons, 10-year-old Jonathan and 6-year-old Jack. Although excited to welcome a third child, the two were shocked when they found out Hathaway was pregnant again.

"We knew what we were doing, but were very surprised that it worked," Hathaway said on Late Night With Seth Meyers on July 13.

He called the pregnancy a "buzzer-beater", a term in basketball for a shot that goes in just before the end of the game.

Hathaway first met Shulman at the Palm Springs Film Festival in 2008. They married in 2012.

"I knew from the first second I met him that he was the love of my life," the Oscar winner told Harper's Bazaar U.K. in 2013.

Shulman also accompanied Hathaway through a very busy year. Throughout 2026, five of the films he starred in premiered, namely Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The End of Oak Street, Verity, and The Odyssey.

"He supports me completely. In every way, he's the most incredible person I've ever met," Hathaway told People in April.

According to Hathaway, Shulman is always ready to handle various things and become his dream partner.

The Odyssey is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17.
