JAKARTA - Base Entertainment is once again hitting the horror film industry in the country by announcing the latest project titled Paket Santet.
The film, which is scheduled to be released on August 27, tries to combine traditional mythology with the modern habits of Indonesian society, namely online shopping and receiving packages every day.
Base Entertainment producer, Osher, explained that the idea for the film came from a desire to provide something different in the midst of a horror film onslaught.
"We want to try to give a horror that is still familiar to Indonesian audiences, but there is a novelty element to it. Well, this time we happen to be chatting with Dinna, the director, Dinna is bringing a very interesting concept," said Osher in South Jakarta, Monday, July 13.
Osher highlights how vulnerable the personal space of humans is in this digital era.
"What if a curse or a santet is sent - we know that santet is always sent like that. Well, but now with the age where the delivery process is so easy, we buy goods online and others easily enter our house without us knowing what we are bringing in," he explained.
Furthermore, he revealed that the medium of sending spells in this film uses something unexpected, namely bees.
"The incense that was sent must have a medium. Well, but what we often hear is maybe through chickens or centipedes. What if the animal is even more unassuming, something we didn't expect, which is through a bee," added Osher.
Director Dinna Jasanti also admitted that this idea was strengthened by the mystical trend on social media.
"When we thought about the idea, it also passed through the FYP, I was on social media, there was a digital shaman. So the idea was like, 'Ah, digitally, like Osher said, the packages are easy to get into the house.' And it became like an idea that came up," recalled Dinna.
Dinna felt the relationship between daily life and horror was very close, especially when she heard the courier's screams in front of the house.
"When I received the script, the first word on the first page was the courier calling, 'Package!'. And it was the voice of the courier who always appeared in front of my house every morning. It became like a relationship, 'Oh it happens every day'," he said.
The main fear in this film is built from the recipient's ignorance when opening a mysterious delivery.
"The horror came when the package was received. Sometimes when we receive it, is it COD, we have paid for it, sometimes we don't even see who sent it, we just open it. And when we open it, the curse happens," said Dinna.
Yasamin Jasem, the main actor named Bela, admitted that he was surprised when he saw the bee visualization in the poster and trailer.
"I was shocked but also expected at the same time because in the trailer there was also a scene of being stung by bees as much. When I saw it was quite like 'Oh, a wasp, a wasp.' The wasp is afraid, like one is very sick. I've seen my mother get it, this is all there," said Yasamin.
Fatih Unru who plays Deva added that fear in the film is born from simple things that are considered trivial.
"Fear is born from simple things. Simple things that we consider trivial that happen just like that in our lives, it turns out that it can take us to a terrible place," said Fatih.
For Fatih, the premise of the package is a terrible breakthrough.
"Receiving a package for Fatih is also common, but I never thought that oh yes, it turns out that the amulet can be packaged? And when the package arrives, it's like it's over. It means you already know when your death is," he concluded.
