Dwayne Johnson Reveals Why The Odd Couple Project with Kevin Hart is Delayed

JAKARTA - Dwayne Johnson almost made his Broadway debut with Kevin Hart through The Odd Couple. The plan has not been able to run because Hart's schedule is full for the next three to five years.

USA Today, quoted on Monday, July 13, reported that Johnson revealed the plan while attending the Moana red carpet in New York. He admitted that he had been trying to make his Broadway debut for three years.

"We should have been able to perform great. Kevin is my best friend. I love him very much, but his schedule is full for the next three to five years," Johnson told People on July 9.

Johnson said he understood Hart's busy schedule and respected his friend's schedule. However, he still wanted to perform on the Broadway stage.

"We are still working on Jumanji and will promote it at the end of the year. However, I will not give up on that dream," he said.

Johnson, 54, and Hart, 47, will return to star together in the sequel to Jumanji: The Next Level.

Johnson is also still looking for a Broadway project with theater producers Jeffrey Seller and Thomas Kail, the director of Hamilton and Moana.

"Maybe The Odd Couple with Jeffrey. I don't know, maybe a musical and I can run around singing in a tone that doesn't even exist," Johnson said.

He also joked that he might dance and shake his waist a little on stage.

Johnson started to feel more confident singing after performing "You're Welcome" in the 2016 animated film Moana.

"Now I'm not nervous at all," Johnson told USA Today while attending the world premiere of his latest film in Los Angeles on July 7.

He said the children who knew him as Maui often asked him to sing.

"They usually say, 'He's not Maui.' Then I sing 'You're Welcome', and they immediately say, 'That's Maui. Sing again,'" he said.

Johnson also received praise for his role as former mixed martial arts champion Mark Kerr in Benny Safdie's The Smashing Machine. The role earned him a Golden Globe nomination for best actor.
