JAKARTA - Minister of Culture (Menbud) Fadli Zon encourages the use of extended reality or XR technology to strengthen the national film industry, especially children's films, historical films, science fiction films, and the development of local intellectual property or IP.

The encouragement was conveyed when Fadli received a visit from producer Dendi Reynando and director Upie Guava at the Ministry of Culture Office, Jakarta, Thursday, April 9. The meeting discussed the development of the film Pelangi di Mars and the opportunities for the use of XR in Indonesian film production.

Dendi and Upie explained that Pelangi on Mars was developed from the need for quality Indonesian children's films that could spark imagination. The film was worked on as a science fiction work with XR technology that was researched and built in Indonesia for about three years. The process includes the construction of a studio and the improvement of human resource capabilities.

According to Upie, XR gives filmmakers more space to build visual backgrounds without relying too much on physical locations and large production costs. The technology, said Upie, allows directors to experiment more freely. "With XR, directors can experiment and imagine more broadly without being limited by the constraints of conventional production costs," he said.

Dendi added that Pelangi on Mars was also prepared as part of the strategy for the development of local IP. The characters in the film are directed to enter into licenses and derivative products so that they have greater economic value and competitiveness in the national market.

He also assessed that XR has great potential for historical films, especially for re-presenting a complicated past background without having to build a high-cost physical set. According to him, the technology can open up a wider range of viewing options for the public.

Fadli welcomed the innovation positively. He assessed that XR could be a strategic step to strengthen the national film ecosystem. According to Fadli, Indonesia needs to encourage the birth of content that is not only entertaining, but also educational and inspiring, especially those that raise the theme of science and technology. "We need to encourage the birth of STEM-themed works that can inspire the community while strengthening the competitiveness of Indonesian culture," said the Minister.

He emphasized that Indonesia has a very rich source of stories, both from scientists and the long history of the Nusantara civilization. However, he reminded that technology alone is not enough. Ideas and story lines, he said, remain the main foundation of a strong film.
