JAKARTA - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia recently advised the public to save gas when cooking. This appeal was made amid concerns about the global energy crisis, which was triggered by the conflict in the Middle East.

"If you cook with LPG, if the food is cooked, don't let the stove be wasteful," said Bahlil, in a video uploaded to TikTok @bloktuban, quoted Saturday, March 28, 2026.

Regarding saving gas usage while cooking, there are several practical tips that can be done, as below which is quoted from Food NDTV.

1. Cook with a covered pot

Cooking with a covered pot is a simple way to save gas. This technique helps heat and steam remain trapped inside the container.

With the heat maintained, the food can cook faster and evenly, so that the use of gas is more efficient and economical.

2. Low cooking ingredients before cooking

Soaking cooking ingredients before cooking is also a way to save gas. This method is suitable for cooking ingredients in the form of beans, tubers, to rice.

The soaking process makes the ingredients softer. This makes the cooking time shorter and the gas usage is not wasteful.

3. Use the appropriate furnace size

The right use of the stove can also help save gas when cooking. Make sure the size of the fire matches the diameter of the pot or the face used.

A small pot on a big fire makes heat wasted to the side. On the other hand, a large pot on a small fire will take longer to cook and waste gas.

With the right size, the heat can be optimally channeled to the food. The cooking process can run faster and the gas is more economical.

4. Cook in large quantities

Cooking in large quantities can also be an effective way to save gas. Once cooked, you can prepare several servings for some time. This can help reduce the frequency of repeatedly turning on the stove, which can make gas wasteful.
