YOGYAKARTA - A teacher has the responsibility to guide, educate, assess, and evaluate the ability of students. In addition to teaching, teachers are also figures who have an influence in the formation of student character. Therefore, there are several professional competencies of teachers that must be mastered in accordance with applicable laws.

Professional Competency Standards for Teachers

Quoted from Antara, Law Number 14 of 2005 concerning Teachers and Lecturers has regulated the standards of competence that teachers must master in order to achieve the title of professional teacher. Below is an explanation of each of the professional competencies of teachers contained in article 10 paragraph 1.

Pedagogical Competence

Pedagogical competence is the ability of teachers to understand students, design and implement the learning process, and evaluate student learning outcomes to optimize their potential. To master pedagogical competence, a teacher must meet the six aspects below.

Understand the characteristics of students so that the learning methods that are arranged can meet the needs of students. Able to compile effective syllabuses and learning plans in accordance with the applicable curriculum. Mastering the material, theory, and principles of learning to produce effective learning strategies, so that students can receive the material well. Provide assistance so that students are able to develop their potential. Able to create an interactive and conducive learning environment. Able to implement assessment and evaluation systems that can measure student competencies appropriately. Personality Competency

Personality competence is closely related to the characteristics of teachers. A professional teacher must be able to reflect a personality that can be an example for students. To become a professional teacher, educators must have the following personality.

Stable personality, teachers must act according to the norms in the community and consistently follow the values held by the community. Mature personality, that is, teachers have emotional, intellectual, and social maturity, so that they can carry out their role as an example for students. Wise personality, which means that an educator must be able to be wise in making decisions, have broad insight, and be open to various inputs. Authoritative personality, the teacher's attitude can make students feel reluctant and the teacher's behavior has a positive influence on students. Have noble morals, such as sincerity, honesty, high empathy, and love to help.Social Competence

The competencies that teachers must have are closely related to the interaction of teachers with the surrounding environment. Professional educators must master the ability to communicate and socialize, both with fellow teachers, students, parents/guardians, or other school residents.

Standards that teachers need to fulfill to master social competence, among others:

Be objective by not discriminating against students based on economic background, physical condition, social status, gender, race, or religion.

Able to communicate politely, empathically, and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Having the ability to adapt, so that they can easily adjust when carrying out their duties as teachers in various regions which force them to meet with diverse environments and cultures.

Professional Competence

Professional competence is the ability of teachers to master the learning material broadly and deeply. This mastery includes subjects, curriculum, the substance of science, and the teaching methodology.

In order to qualify as a professional teacher, an educator must conquer the indicators below.

Mastering the concept, structure, and scientific mindset of the subjects that teachers teach to students. Always develop creativity to develop learning materials, so that students can gain in-depth knowledge. Understand the standards of competence and basic competencies of each subject that teachers master. Consistently improve personal potential in a sustainable manner. Able to use technology to maximize the learning process in the classroom.

The quality of teachers will certainly determine the future direction of the nation, so that an educator must meet certain competence requirements to advance Indonesian education. From the explanation above, there are four competencies that teachers must have, namely pedagogical, personality, social, and professional competencies.

The standard not only serves to optimize student potential. Because, by meeting the above qualifications, teachers can complete their teaching tasks easily. Thus, the increasing performance will be directly proportional to the wages they get.
