JAKARTA - Minister of Culture Fadli Zon supports the revival of the Indonesian comedy art ecosystem which is trying to be realized in the Grand Final of the 2025 Bing Slamet Group Comedy Competition at the Sultan Hotel, Jakarta, Sunday, December 21. This competition is considered a strategic momentum to revive the tradition of comedy groups which had been successful for a long time on the national entertainment stage.
The competition, which was held by the Ministry of Culture together with the Yayasan Karya Gemilang Komedi Indonesia (YKGI), was attended by 58 comedy groups from various regions. The selection was carried out strictly, starting from video auditions, quarantine, mentoring, to live performances in the final round.
"This is not just a race. This is a space for regeneration and strengthening the comedy art ecosystem which was once very strong and we must revive it," said Fadli Zon in an official statement, December 22.
He emphasized that comedy art is an important part of national cultural expression that has a strategic position in the advancement of culture.
Menbud Fadli also mentioned Bing Slamet as a central figure in Indonesian performing arts. The designation of September 27 as National Comedy Day, which coincides with Bing Slamet's birthday, is said to be the state's recognition of the great contribution of comedy art to Indonesian popular culture.
According to Fadli, this competition is relevant to the development of the times because it utilizes digital technology, ranging from YouTube-based selection to the final stage. "The art ecosystem must be adaptive. Comedy can grow, collaborate, and remain relevant," he said.
From the 16 semifinalist groups, six groups advanced to the finals. The Mlumah group from Malang came out as the I Champion, followed by the Bertingkah Group (Bekasi) and the Tembok Group (Jakarta). The jury's assessment focused on the originality of the material, the team's cohesiveness, improvisation, and the quality of the jokes.
